An arraignment is a defendant’s formal response in court to the formal charges filed by the state. It can involve reading of the charges and the defendant’s plea. The defendant may opt to waive the reading of the charges. Also, the defendant’s counsel can waive the arraignment if he files a written plea of not guilty.

If the defendant does not have counsel, the court will advise him of his right to counsel during the arraignment proceedings. Arraignments can be conducted in person or by electronic audiovisual devices.
